Can the Orion 02 REM operate without a BXL Primary controller?

No. The REM is a remote expansion node and must be paired with a BXL Primary controller. It is not compatible with the Standard Orion 02 controller.

When should I use a REM instead of a Standard controller?

Use a REM when your system has physically separated battery segments, requires HV isolation, or benefits from shorter harness runs. If one controller can service the entire pack, the Standard Orion 02 may be sufficient.

What is included in the REM kit?

The REM Controller, REM I/O wiring harness, cell tap harnesses, and an 8-thermistor harness.

What the REM does

The Orion 02 Remote (REM) is an expansion controller that extends a BXL Primary Orion 02 into physically separated battery segments. The BXL orchestrates system logic while the REM provides localized cell monitoring, temperature sensing, balancing, and tap harness interfacing at the satellite pack. This yields cleaner harnessing, shorter HV runs, and safer isolation between sections.

When to choose the REM vs. Standard

Use REM + BXL when…

Packs are distributed (front/rear, port/starboard, wing/boom, etc.).
You need isolation between HV sections for safety/compliance.
HV cabling must be shortened to reduce resistance and EMI.
Systems demand modularity and serviceable sub-assemblies.

Use Standard Orion 02 when…

A single, centralized controller can service the whole pack.
Space allows one mounting location and no split packs are needed.
Harness lengths and isolation constraints are modest.

Compatibility: The REM must be paired with a BXL Primary. It is not compatible with the Orion 02 Standard controller.
